My Say and Thought: A day almost forgotten by all Malaysian except for...
My Say and Thought 0 Comments »46 years ago, 16 September 1963, something big happened in South East Asia. A new nation was born... a nation which now had been divided into 2... a nation called Malaysia.
If you happened to be a Malaysian reader, there might just be two reaction. Either you scratch your head in confusion for the 'fact' that 'Malaysia' gain independent on 31st August 1957 and had celebrated it's 52th anniversary not so long ago or you are in deep pain that no voices had been made regarding the significance national day of a nation you live in.
A quick historical review, on 31st August 1957, Federation of Malaya was form, after the last time Union Jack was flagged in soil of Malaya Peninsula that day. And no, it was not Malaysia, it was Malaya or Persekutuan Tanah Melayu in Malay. After much debate and referendum made, it was on the 16 September 1963, Singapore, Sarawak, Sabah and Malaya formed another new nation called Malaysia. However, Singapore and Malaysia split in 1969 after racial crisis.
Therefore, the date 31st August 1957 was actually a national day for a former nation which only lasted for a MERE 6 years and 16 days. And yet, after 46 years of defunct, our federal government still insist to celebrate national day of a former nation. The reason given by our government was that Sabah, Sarawak and Singapore joined Malaya during that time. And that Malaysia was not a new nation. This really challenge the sentimental patients of Sarawakian and Sabahans, or at least those who are really at heart and soul with the state. The word joined used really does shows disrespect for Sarawak and Sabah for what the 2 states had contributed to the nation it formed.
Forget about the oil, log, and other natural resources contributed to the federal government, Sarawak and Sabah had always been given the least amount of development fund per unit area in the states. This is proven by poor quality federal trunk road available. Even some major part of Sarawak was not connected or needed to be separated by another nation Brunei. This cause immobility for indigenous people in the two states to suffer most. The federal government really had overlook their right which is preserves by the Malaysian Constitution which put them as the same rank and category as... er... Malay? Now where is the Agong to protect them? They were all living in pain. They might also not knowing what nation they belongs as they were neglected!
I myself being a Sarawakian feels sad for the government not honouring the fact that Malaysia is a nation and 16 September as the National Day of Malaysia. Even more painful, the federal government actually formed majority by Sarawak and Sabah law makers. Strangely, the cabinet consists of less than 1/4 Sarawakian and Sabahan. And for the fact that these 2 states were often neglected in Rancangan-rancangan Malaysia although of course, the cabinet which are almost empty with Sarawakian and Sabahan ministers deny all of it.
Is this really a discrimination, or are Sarawakian and Sabahan really are too afraid or not knowing the situation are?
Now back to the title, A day almost forgotten by all Malaysian except for..., I must say, today indeed is a day almost forgotten by all Malaysian except for those who studies Malaysian history or those hard core lovers of Sarawak and Sabah. But I don't know how long can these people live before the G rewrites history themselves (as what they did referring Rajah Brooke's dynasty as colonization... I'm asking you, how can a King be a colonizing his own nation? How bout Sumatran born Parameswara and our current Sultans and Agong then?) and all true Sarawakian and Sabahan dies.
Anyhow, I will always stay Malaysian and will always cherish September the 16th as the National Day of my beloved nation and that August 31st are celebrated by ego crazy peninsula ministers and those they had brain washed.
